In Creative class we experimented with using high definition photography. To execute this a photographer makes 3 separate exposures. One that has the correct exposure value, an exposure that is too bright, and one too dark. Then using photoshop or my preferred program- Photomatix, you can stitch the images together to get a dynamic range of tones that you would not normally get from the original photo.
